Orthotics have long had a positive reputation in rehabilitation as a method for improving the functional state of children with neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy, stroke, etc. In the world of physical therapy, orthotics for ICP is widely used in the West and in European countries, but unfortunately, there is very little information available for parents of “special” children in Ukraine. We would like to share with you the information we possess and open the curtain of this method.

What is orthotics? Orthotics is a method of treatment and prevention of pathologies of the musculoskeletal system, with the help of special devices – orthotics. This method consists in fixing the joint orthosis, in the correct anatomic position, preventing incorrect movements.

Do I need orthotics for cerebral palsy? Like other therapeutic interventions, this method is not universal. In order to determine if orthotics are necessary for your child with cerebral palsy, you must know the indications for this method. There are not many indications for orthotics for children with neurological conditions, so try to remember them.

Orthotics are indicated:

  • When the range of motion of the joint is limited.
  • Severe muscle spasticity that causes the joint to be in a static position for long periods of time.
  • When there is poor support or stabilization of the joint.
  • When the legs are incorrectly positioned while walking.

If these indications occur, you should see a specialist,

He or she will advise you and help you in the further course of action.

What are orthoses and what are they for?

Orthotics is an individual orthotic device that provides the correct anatomical position of the joints.

First and foremost, orthotics are designed to prevent contractures and deformities by ensuring the correct positioning of the affected joint, and they also provide

  • Better support and stabilization of the joints.
  • Reduced spasticity.
  • Preservation of normal joint range of motion.
  • Stabilization during vertical stance and improvement of walking.
  • Reduction of exercise energy consumption, thereby improving the quality of therapeutic interventions.

How long does one have to wear orthoses? It is generally accepted that the positive effect will be pronounced if you wear orthoses for at least 8 hours a day. However, keep in mind that once you buy orthoses, the child needs time to adjust. Therefore, you should wear them for a much shorter period of time for your children. Start wearing orthotics for one hour a day, gradually increasing the load. This will make it much easier for your child to adapt and the process will not be antagonistic.

What should you do if an orthosis takes away your child’s function? The important factor is that your child should be comfortable in the orthosis and that it should not cause pain. If an orthosis is taking away function, then they are not right for your child. You may have made a mistake in measuring or choosing the type of orthosis and your child is experiencing discomfort when using them. This is why it is very important to choose the right type of orthosis and if necessary to perform a good individual measurement. Luckily our center has enough specialists to help you with this.
