A training apartment is a specially equipped apartment that allows children and adults with disabilities to learn to perform everyday tasks in conditions that are as close as possible to their real life.
The apartment consists of a room, a kitchen and a bathroom, which are equipped with special furniture and appliances that meet the needs of people with functional limitations.
An occupational therapist works in the training apartment, who helps children and adults learn how to perform such tasks as:
- self-care (dressing, washing, washing, cooking, cleaning, etc.);
- moving around the apartment;
- use of household appliances;
- social interaction.
Occupational therapy in the training apartment is carried out individually or in a group. During classes, the occupational therapist helps children and adults with functional limitations develop optimal ways of performing everyday tasks that take into account their individual needs and abilities.
Here are examples of how training can take place in a training apartment:
- a visually impaired person can learn to use special furniture and appliances that allow him or her to navigate in space and perform everyday tasks without outside help;
- a person with a limitation of the musculoskeletal system can learn to move around the apartment in a wheelchair, use household appliances and take a bath;
- a person with hearing loss can learn to understand what other people are saying and communicate with them.
Training in a training apartment helps children and adults with functional limitations:
- increase the level of self-help and autonomy;
- adapt to life in a familiar environment;
- improve the quality of life.
