Family psychotherapy

Psychological work with parents is aimed at correcting their emotional and volitional sphere, teaching the means of self-regulation of the mental state and methods of managing conflicts in the family.

Everyone knows the safety rule: in an airplane, an adult puts the oxygen mask on himself first, and then on the child.

Very often, families raising a child with developmental disabilities throw all their material and moral resources at the child’s development, while the parents lose energy and effort, and find themselves on the verge of depression.

The first stage of psychological help for parents is to find out whether the parents have accepted the diagnosis. Because psychological comfort in the family and its well-being depend on this.

Children usually perceive the diagnosis through the imagination of their parents. If it remains an unlived tragedy for the parents, the child or teenager will perceive it in the same way. If the family lives fully taking into account the needs of the child, then the child will feel more free and confident.

Divorce is a common problem of families raising children with disabilities. Unfortunately, it is the father who often leaves the family because of unjustified expectations, hopelessness of the future, helplessness and fear. Psychological support can help save the family.

The psychologist’s goal in working with parents:

  • formation of a responsible parental position;
  • help in finding sources of resources and restoring a sense of ability to solve problems;
  • increasing the ability of parents to effectively resolve conflicts in the family;
  • increasing the happiness index of parents and their confidence and faith in their child.

A psychologist at the John’s Center works both with both parents together and with each parent separately, depending on the individual needs of the family.
